A Basic Early History of Johnsonburg
The territory in which Johnsonburg is located was the domain of the Seneca tribe of Indians and was sold by Chief Cornplanter to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on October 23, 1784 by the provisions of the treaty at Fort Stanwix. Large tracts of land were divided up and passed through several large landholders until, in 1807; Benjamin F. Cooper purchased 3,000 acres which included our area.
David Johnson, and his wife, came to what is now Johnsonburg in 1810 and settled at the junction of the East and West Branches of the Clarion River. Mr. Johnson built a crude log cabin and gained his living by gardening, fishing and hunting. He had a large potato patch and did business selling seed potatoes.
When the Montmorenci area became settled, Mr. Johnson decided that the area was getting crowded and he moved on to the Big Mill Creek area. Johnsonburg entered an era of little activity until around 1860 when the railroad began to open the area for development. A post office was established in 1888 and the Borough of Johnsonburg was incorporated in 1891.
